An international FTSE 100 company with over 4000 direct employees worldwide engaged in the development, manufacture and sale of wound care products, precision engineered orthopaedic replacements and endoscope (electronic) related products.

Based at the main UK site of Smith & Nephew in Hull where 1,100 persons were employed.  Key duties include:

·Ensuring UK compliance with existing health, safety and environmental legislation and directing preparations for proposed new legislation.

·Supporting continuous HSE improvement, planning and monitoring.

Auditing HSE systems at UK and European sites operated by Smith & Nephew.

Advising Smith & Nephew Global on impending EU environmental legislation and compliance strategy.

Obtaining Pollution Prevention & Control (PPC) Permits from the Environment Agency for Section 4.1 and 6.4 Part A (1) chemical processes.

Trackwork Limited,

A rapidly growing company involved in railway installation and maintenance with a client base that now includes Network Rail, British Nuclear Fuels and London Underground / Tube Lines.  Recruited by the Contracts Director who had previously worked as a Specialist Construction Inspector in the Health and Safety Inspectorate and was familiar with the quality of my work.  The role developed during my time with the company to include:

Recruiting, nurturing and managing the SEQ Department from inception to it becoming an extremely effective, target focused unit driving continuous improvement.

Introducing robust SEQ management systems that could withstand external audit.

Obtaining and maintaining ISO 9001:2000 and Railtrack / Network Rail Contractor Assurance Case Certification.

Introducing ISO 14001:1994 environmental management systems.

Providing distance support to the Safety Manager attached to the London Underground Team.

I became HM Inspector of Factories (later of Health and Safety) after a rigorous selection process, and three years of training in the application of health and safety legislation.

My work included.

Advising on health and safety legislation in South Yorkshire, Hull and East Riding for shipbuilding / ship repair, manufacturing industry, local authorities, building / construction / NHS Trusts, the Port of Hull and all travelling / fixed site fairs in the region.

Advising the national interest group (NIG) on matters relating to shipbuilding / ship repair.

Taking enforcement action by use of statutory notices and prosecution. Preparing prosecution reports, conducting Summary cases and briefing council on cases sent for Committal.

·Conducting safety management audits on NHS Trusts, Local Authorities and large multi-site manufacturing companies.
