Overview
Managing health and safety is integral to general good management but there are times when keeping up with regulations and running your business can be a worry. Having advised and assisted employers across industries as diverse as agriculture, construction, food manufacture and engineering, to outdoor events and the Care sector I can confidently guide you through the legal complexities, apply what is relevant to your business in a practical and proportionate manner - and without all the jargon.
Whilst the primary aim is to prevent injury and ill health at work, a broader holistic approach goes beyond legal compliance and helps your team build upon existing good practice, remove inefficiencies to improve systems and work more effectively. Inspections and audits will check what's actually happening and complicated risk assessments pared back to focus on hazards and control measures. In my experience the correct approach encourages individual and team ownership of health and safety to achieve ongoing and continual improvement.
Any compliance issue can seem daunting, even overwhelming. Whatever the situation, you need to talk to someone who can break things down into simple steps and focus on the main issues to help you avoid costly knee-jerk reactions. I can liaise with enforcing bodies and insurers on your behalf whilst working with you to find practical solutions and limit further damage.

Services
General consultancy
Approachable and friendly providing proportionate, evidence-based advice to help manage health and safety risks at all levels within an organisation and, importantly, having the experience and confidence to say what you don't need to do.
Audits
BSi trained Management Systems Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS18001:2007 converted 2018 to ISO45001
An audit doesn't have to meet an 'official' standard. However, any safety audit should examine and determine whether or not daily activities and processes conform to your planned health and safety arrangements as well as legislation. It should also check that those arrangements are implemented effectively and are suitable to achieve your organization’s health and safety policy objectives. Serious incidents are often traced back to a failure in health and safety management. The purpose is to assist in identifying failures within a system, process, or programme and to use the information gathered to help determine the best course of corrective action.
Inspections
A general health and safety inspection, like an audit, checks for compliance with regulations and standards during work activities, for potential or actual safety hazards and unsafe practices:
- Are workplaces in good safe condition as far as is reasonably practicable?
- Are proper safeguards in place (physical or procedural)?
- Does equipment present any hazards?
- Is there observed or evidence of unsafe work practice ?
Where deficiencies are found it's important to uncover why, so that proper recommendations for improvement can be made
Investigations
Serious incidents are investigated to uncover the root causes, generally a combination of factors. The aim is to determine the facts and the sequence of events, to learn lessons, make changes where necessary and effect positive change in future behaviour; ultimately, to prevent a recurrence. It's important to remain objective, to establish facts not hearsay and supposition, and to be sensitive to workforce morale whilst gathering information.
