ISO originated from the union of two organisations – the ISO (International Federation of the National Standardising Associations) and the UNSCC (United Nations Standard Coordinating Committee). In 1946 over 25 countries met at the Institute of Civil Engineers in London to create a new international organisation, where the objective was to ‘facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards’.
From this the new organisation ISO began operations in February 1947.
The word ISO is derived from the Greek ISOS meaning ‘equal’. As the International Organisation for Standardisation would translate differently across different languages it was decided that the short form name for the organisation would be ISO.
ISO 9001 is a quality management system, implementing a systematic and process driven approach to managing your business.
ISO 14001 is an environmental management system for controlling the aspects of your business that have a significant impact on the environment.
ISO 18001 is a framework for an occupational health and safety management system. It can help you put in place the policies, procedures and controls needed for your organisation to achieve the best possible working conditions, aligned to internationally recognised best practice.
ISO 20121 was inspired by London 2012. Based on BS 8901, it was published in time for the Olympic event, which was a resounding success for sustainability management. ISO 20121 has been developed for the events industry to help you put sustainability first when managing and delivering your event. It’s for event companies or for businesses that put on events. The standard takes into account the geography, culture and social demographic of your event
