I am a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CFIOSH), with over thirty years’ experience of advising organisations at both a strategic and operational level, supporting them to fulfil their health and safety responsibilities.
I have a successful track record of working with organisations to continually improve their health and safety compliance and culture, thereby improving employee wellbeing and engagement and reducing the risk of reputational damage, fines and civil claims.
My areas of expertise include:
- Leading health and safety culture change programmes, aligning with the organisation's mission and values.
- Developing pragmatic and meaningful health and safety policies and standards.
- Gaining buy-in through listening, coaching, collaborating and building positive relationships.
- Raising compliance and providing assurance through audit, change programmes and performance reporting.
- Building and leading high performance teams.
I have successfully embedded health and safety management systems in large, diverse public sector organisations, resulting in continually improving health and safety performance, which is essential to organisational goals and employee wellbeing and engagement.
I primarily work in Essex, London, Suffolk and Hertfordshire, but am prepared to take on contracts that are further afield.

Audits
I can carry out a range of health and safety audits, including:
- Management audits (HSG65, HASMAP, ISO45001)
- Statutory compliance
- Subject specific audits
Following the audit I will provide you with a report and a plan of what you need to do to improve your health and safety management system and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
Investigations
If you have had a serious incident, I can assist you by carying out a thorough and impartial investigation.
The incident investigation reports will identify immediate, underlying and root causes of the incident and make recomendations to prevent recurrence.
The investigation will help you to learn lessons that can be applied across your organisation, helping you to continually improve your health and safety management system.
ISO 45001 Gap Analysis
Desktop review of your health and safety management system against the ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) standard. The gap analysis will help you to :
- Assess what you need to do to align your organisation to the standard, or
- Check whether you are accreditation ready.
I will provide you with a report identifying what you do well and areas for improvement. You can use the findings to improve the robustness of your health and safety management system.
If you want to progress to accreditation I can connect you with accredited ISO 45001 audit and certification services.
Interim Head of Health and Safety Roles
I am able to undertake interim placements of varying length, either to:
- Temporarily fill a vacant role
- Undertake a review of your health an safety management system
- Support you with implementing improvements to your health and safety management system.
When you are ready to recruit someone permanently, I can provide competent health and safety support to your recruitment process.
Although I am primarily based in Essex / London I am able to accept longer term interim placements further afield.
My support will help you through difficult times. You will have less worry, knowing that your health and safety function is in safe, competent hands.
On leaving I can provide you with a report on the work I have done and, where appropriate, recommendations for further enhancements to your health an dsafety management system.
Development of bespoke policies and standards
I am passionate about creating simple, practical standards that support and motivate the end user.
I can review your lengthy policies and convert them into simplified standards. Or I can build standards from scratch.
I will work with your emplyees to create imple practical, meaninful standards that your employees can understand.
Support during HSE / EH investigations
A visit by an HSE (Health and Safety Executive) or Environmental Health inspector can be a nerve wracking experience and responding to enforcement notices are resource intensive. You need to be open and cooperative, but also to take care to protect your organisation from prosecution and reputatioonal damage.
I can help you by:
- Managing the relationship with your enforcement body,
- Developing and monitoring plans to address shortcomings identified by the inspector
- keeping track of information provided to the investigating officer
- Providing advice and support to help you meet the requirements of any notices served.
With my help we can linit the impact of an enforcement investigation on you and your organisation.

National Involvement / Profile
- Major contributor to a working group, which reviewed and updated University sector standards for student placements. Personally, provided templates which are now used nationally.
- Developed technical guidance for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) on rehabilitation (A Healthy Start) and wellbeing (Working Well).
- As a member of a NICE Programme Development Group, contributed to the development of public health guidance on managing long term sickness and incapacity for work.
