Mr Colin Nottage
Overview
I have worked in health and safety for more than 30 years, but increasingly I believe that good health and safety is about much more than compliance, paperwork and procedures.
It is about people, leadership and the way organisations really work.
Since establishing Influential Management Group in 2006, I have worked alongside business owners, directors, senior leaders and health and safety professionals across a wide range of industries. My approach is practical, positive and focused on helping people develop solutions that work in the real world.
I believe the best organisations move beyond simply asking:
“Are we compliant?”
and start asking:
“How do we know this is really working?”
That means spending time with people, understanding the work, listening to those closest to the risk and helping leaders create an environment where people feel able to speak up, challenge, contribute and improve.
Developing Leaders
This philosophy led to the creation of Navigator, our leadership development programme for business owners, directors and senior managers.
Navigator helps leaders look at health and safety through a different lens. Rather than concentrating primarily on legislation and systems, we explore the leadership behaviours, conversations and decisions that create organisations where people can succeed safely, perform at their best and continually improve.
Because health and safety is not simply a measure of compliance. It can be one of the clearest indicators of how well an organisation is being led.

Developing Health & Safety Professionals
I am equally passionate about developing the people who advise those organisations.
Through Pathfinder, I coach health and safety consultants and professionals who want to move beyond being seen simply as technical experts and become trusted advisers to their clients and organisations.
Pathfinder explores understanding clients, building stronger relationships, communicating with influence, creating greater value and developing a consultancy or career that is both successful and personally rewarding.

My aim is not to create consultants who know more legislation. It is to help good professionals become people that leaders want in the room when important decisions are being made.
Experience Behind the Approach
Before establishing my consultancy, I spent many years in operational and senior health and safety roles, including leading health and safety teams within major UK businesses. That experience shaped a simple belief that continues to influence my work:
The people doing the work are not the problem to be controlled. They are often the greatest source of knowledge we have.
I am a Chartered Member of IOSH and an OSHCR registered consultant, and my career has included working with HSE partnership initiatives in construction and quarrying, representing the Institute of Quarrying, tutoring postgraduate Safety and Risk Management and mentoring health and safety professionals.
I am also the host of The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast, where I have had the privilege of speaking with business leaders, health and safety professionals and people from many different walks of life about leadership, risk, culture and what really makes organisations work.
How I Work
Whether I am supporting an organisation, coaching a senior leader or developing another health and safety professional, my approach remains the same.
Listen first. Understand the work. Ask better questions. Involve people. Then build something that genuinely helps.
Influential Management Group provides practical health and safety consultancy, leadership development and professional coaching to organisations and individuals who want to go beyond simply being compliant.
Because ultimately, great health and safety should not just create safer organisations.
It should help create better ones.
