Overview
Darren Bedson is Managing Director of BPA Services Limited based in Stoke on Trent but offering nationwide and, if required international work. Darren is a Chartered Fellow of the Institution Occupational Safety Health, Fellow International Institute Risk Management, Technician member Institute Fire Engineers and Incorporated Member Association Professional Safety.
BPA as been in business since 1987 and our speciality is health and safety in the modular construction sector having worked on major projects which include Salisbury Plains Garrisons at Tidworth, Perham Down and also at Aldershot and Colchester. We also carry out the Principal Designer role for a major international car manufacturer for their UK organisation. Although our speciality is construction based health and safety we are also involved in various other sectors such as healthcare working for major hospitals, education, local authorities, housing associations,transport, manufacturing and various other sectors.
Our CDM services have been a major part of our business since 1994 where we have acted as the original Planning Supervisor then, from 2007 CDM Coordinator and, on-going from April 6th as Principal Designer working in conjunction with various design companies. Where the lead designer or client wish to act directly as the Principal Designer we are directly appointed by them in some projects as the principal designer consultant to ensure that the architect or client are fulfilling their duties.

Fees
Our fees are bespoke to the individual requirement as we only offer an hands on service which allows us to become part of the clients internal management team. Our clients range from sole traders such as plasterers, plumbers, etc. to manufacturing organisations which employ in excess of hundred plus people so the fees reflect the level of service agreed.
Audits
Our consultants work throughout the UK, Northern and Republic of Ireland carrying out audits of offices, construction sites, warehouses, manufacturing, etc. from our Stoke base which is central to allow ease of travel.
General consultancy
Health and Safety consultancy is available to allow the client to concentrate on the day to day running of their business safely knowing that they are acting in compliance with their legal health and safety duties.
Injury Reporting
Where our clients are on a retained service we are made aware of any accident, incidents which have occured and, where required we put the report in to the HSE on their behalf and act as the main point of contact for them.
Investigations
We carry out accident investigations which entail going to site of the accident to collect witness statements, accident report information, training records, risk assessments, safe system of work, etc. and, assess the incident area as well as discussions with various parties to try and establish a root cause for the accident. Where the HSE are involved we ensure that we liaise with the HSE inspector also so that they have the information they require to carry out their investigation.
Bespoke Training
We do compile bespoke training presentations for client needs but these are based on awareness and are designed to last between 1 hour and 4 hours in length.
The subjects we offer in awarness are asbestos, manual handling, construction design management, director responsibility to health and safety, manager responibility to health and safety, manual handling and fire risk. We can caarry out some other subjects so requests are welcomed and if we can we will.
Noise Survey / Risk Assessment
We carry out all types of risk assessments for site specific tasks such as suspended ceilings, partition walls, roof work, manual handling, fire, noise, dust, etc.

Health and Safety Manager - SCA Timber Supplies | 03.2002 - 10.2006 | I commenced work at this employment in January 1988 but at the time it was F.G.Chambers Limited and i was employed as a labourer in the distribution centre. Over the years i worked my way from this to chargehand, shift manager, warehouse manager through to 2002 where after obtaining various qualifications in health and safety i became the company health and safety manager. My responsibility in this role was predominately the health and safety of the day to day operation of the Stoke site employing over 200 people on a 24/7 operation. the set up consisted of our own transport department with a fleet of 30+ HGV's, a goods-in department, a distirbution warehouse, a bulk storage facility and a saw mill. I was also responsible for a site at Warrington and Beckton. During my time in this role though i was also responsible for contractors on site and was responsible for the health and safety / CDM side of three major projects which we had these being a £1m + project to refurbish the distribution warehouse by removing all the old racking and replacing with brand new racking as well as introducing a computerised picking system. Another was to fully automate the saw mill with machinery inported from Germany which was another project value in excess of £1.8m and, the final major project i was responsible for the health and safety management of was the sell off of the Warrington site for housing development which involved ensuring all asbestos was identified and removed, demolition and land clearance. |
Deputy Safety Officer - Port Vale Football Club | 08.2018 - today | I have worked with Port Vale Football Club as one of the safety officers for the club where we ensure the safety of everyone at the stadium during match day and other events. This has lead to new knowledge from courses such as counter-terrorism, safeguarding, accessibility, crowd control and, allowed me to support other clubs with health and safety processes. |
