The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the body responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare.

• Major hazards and the chemical and allied industries (2 years - London & home counties)

Worked as a Safety Adviser for GSK at a large major hazard (top-tier COMAH) primary pharmaceutical manufacturing site . The site stored and
processed significant quantities of toxic and highly flammable materials.

Key achievements: Project manager for the delivery of the site’s first COMAH safety case to the UK Regulator. Primary contact for emergency response planning (Local Authority)  and major accident hazard issues (Health and Safety Executive).

InBev was a leading global brewer with several breweries located in the UK including their large (2.5 million hectolitre/year) modern brewery, packaging and logistics operation at Samlesbury (400+ employees).

Key achievements: 

• 30% improvement in lost time accident frequency over 2 years
• Design and implementation of bespoke IT solution for environment and safety incident reporting (e.g. web-based incident database)
• Commendation in European Agency for Safety and Health at Work Best
• Practice Awards 2004 for roof work; and best practice example for prevention of low falls on Health and Safety Executive’s web-site.
• Implementation of the SafeStart behavioural safety training programme in 2005/6 
• Implementation of a common EHS improvement planning tool across brewery operations
• Management of brewery through two significant mergers including the implementation of new HSE management systems whilst maintaining HSE performance.

Step Change in Safety is the UK oil and gas industry’s flagship safety initiative. It is a tripartite organisation representing employers, the UK regulator and the workforce.The support team is the first point of contact for all Step Change in Safety matters. It helps plan, coordinate, facilitate and promotes Step Change in Safety activities.

Key achievements:

• Development, launch and implementation of the Step Change 5-year strategic plan and subsequent annual reviews.
• Chairmanship of the Human Factors subgroup and project managing the delivery of the successful publication ‘Human Factors – How to take the first steps…’ and associated training pack.
• Introduction of Workforce Safety Representatives (‘the G12’) onto Leadership team
