I’m a Fellow of the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM), a Chartered Member of IOSH, and a Lead Auditor for ISO 45001, with more than 25 years’ experience helping businesses manage health, safety, compliance and risk in a way that fits their size, sector and people.
As the Founder and Director of J McLeish Consultancy Ltd, I provide tailored health and safety consultancy, shaped around what each client actually needs. Working alongside my business partner, a fully qualified HR professional, we also support organisations with compliance, HR matters, and operational improvements offering a joined-up approach that reflects how modern businesses really run.

Head of Safety and Operations | 07.2020 - 10.2022 | In this senior leadership role, I was responsible for conducting a full organisational review and developing an improvement strategy aligned with the company’s goals. I led the implementation of all HSQE and HR policies and procedures, introduced structured operational systems, and supported leadership teams in meeting compliance requirements. I provided strategic direction to both frontline and management teams, improving operational efficiency and safety performance. As part of my remit, I mentored new professionals in the safety field and played an active role in supporting staff wellbeing as a certified mental health first aider. |
Health, Safety and Compliance Manager | 08.2012 - 06.2020 | In this role led the creation and development of the company’s health, safety, and compliance function. I was responsible for establishing a new compliance department, implementing a full suite of ISO-aligned management systems, and leading the successful transition from OHSAS18001 to ISO45001. My leadership extended to all areas of H&S and HR, including the introduction of policies, induction programmes, audits, and performance reviews. I acted as a key liaison for blue-chip clients, ensuring consistent standards and maintaining strong working relationships through strategic support and regular engagement. |
