Managing Director OH&S Manager | 01.2011 - 01.2018 | Specialist Vocational Training Ltd 2011 – 2018 Managing Director – Head of Operations My main focus was to develop the skill set of the existing team of 15 staff across each aspect of the business including marketing & sales, service delivery in terms of student assessment, finance, and awarding body compliance. While achieving this I considered the business income streams and took the decision to add further qualifications to our portfolio which would include qualifications within the Care sector and level seven qualifications within management & leadership. My other main concern was how our business was perceived in the market and I wanted to improve our reputation. This was a challenge; however, I developed a strategy that did not rely upon being the lowest cost provider but was more focused on SVT being one of the best. SVT Ltd is now held in high regard with our awarding bodies and with our clients and students. Practitioner Role SVT Ltd Like most small business owners, I held a practitioner role which included Head of Operations and Health & Safety and named competent person. I also held the position of Lead Assessor for the subjects of OH&S and Leadership and Management qualifications at Level 5, 6 & 7. |
Managing Director | 01.2003 - 08.2011 | SHEilds Group 2003 - 2011 Managing Director – Head of Operations - In 2003 I joined SHEilds Ltd as a founder member holding a 50% share. My role as Managing Director was to build the business. I, along with a very small team of just three staff in 2003 which grew to forty staff by 2011, achieved an increase in turnover from £30,000 per annum 2003 to £2.2 Million within that eight-year period. During this period, I led the business forward opening offices in Dubai and India. In 2011 I sold my 50% share of SHEilds Group and as part of this share deal took ownership of SVT Ltd, the NVQ Diploma arm of business. Practitioner Role - I held a practitioner role which included Head of Operations and Health & Safety and named competent person. I also held the position of Lead Assessor for the subjects of OH&S. I gained and personally delivered on commercial consultancy contracts, undertaking, and developing risk assessment, policy, and safety training etc. The major contract I held was with Hull & East Riding Hospital Trust. I delivered on this contract and held a post on the Risk Management Board as Competent person for H&S for almost two years. |
OH&S Lead & Head of Operations | 01.1999 - 01.2003 | Humber Community Partnership 1999 -2003 Appointed as the H&S Manager at Board level. My first duties were to develop a safety management system compliant with the pertinent regulations and the Governments New Deal contract. The system had to take account of five offices, forty full time staff and 5,000 New Deal Participants and volunteers over a three-year period. My H&S role also included the development of a safety management system for each work placement, including charity shops, care homes, community projects and the refurbishment of churches. Many of these had very little safety management or documentation in place. I developed a safety pack and worked with each placement to ensure they were compliant both with the contract and regulations. Over a period of 3 years I audited approximately 500 places of work and inspected these throughout the contract. I also developed a safety training programme for induction and risk assessment and formed a local initiative named ‘Safety Matters’, supporting small charitable and volunteer groups with their health and safety needs. Once the H&S system was in place I was then promoted to Head of Operations and later Chief Executive in 2002. HCP was a ‘not for profit’ charitable organisation based within the Humberside area, funded at that time by the Governments New Deal initiative and Governed by a Board of Trustees. We gained funding for many employment initiatives and held contracts to a value of £11 Million. |
OH&S Lead | 01.1997 - 01.1999 | Instant Muscle Ltd not for profit 1997 - 1999 Operations & Safety Manager at Instant Muscle Hull and London, coordinating the project teams for the refurbishment of local churches and community halls and delivering safety training to the 200 employees/participants & volunteers. My main area of responsibility was to gain agreements with potential work placements, either charity retail outlets or places of worship/community halls etc and induct participants onto the work sites for reasons of health and safety. Some of these projects included the refurbishment of buildings which fell into the Construction Design Management regulations. As such I acted as the CDM coordinator. While these projects were not complex, the human factors involved were challenging. Past Employment Previous to these senior management positions my employment has included, works manager and sales of services within the precious metals sector, materials and handling sampling supervisor at a smelting plant, and shift operator at Blue Circle Ind Mins. |
