This was an engineering apprenticeship. maintaining large and small scale equipment in a factory environment e,g power presses, compressors, boilers, lifting equipment, steam furnaces and boilers, fork lifts etc.

Servicing and installing printing machinerytravelling  throughout Scotland and local newspapers in Ireland

This involved teaching patients printing skills in a Special Hospital environment (State Hospital Carstairs. I then moved to the Education Dept teaching Maths and IT.

I was the Health and Safety Advisor for the State Hospital Carstairs until retiring in July 2013 after 33 years service. My role was varied and I was part of the Risk Management Team and member of the project team for building the new Hospital. I carried out accident investigations and advised management in partnership with trades unions on health and safety matters. I carried out workplace audits and created risk assessment and audit tools for various departments. I delivered health and safety awareness training for staff in conjunction with Occupation Health staff. During this time I studied and gained a BA degree in Occupational Health and Safety management at GCU.

In addition to some private freelance contracts I carry out consultancy work for the Xact /Citation Group in various sectors eg Golf Courses, Nursing Homes, Vet Practices, Pharmacies, Engineering, audits for insurance brokers.
