Overview
John has in excess of 30 years experience of working within the Construction Sector dating back to 1986 where he began working for a Main Contractor on a Pharmaceutical/Chemical facility. It was during this period that he took an active interest in Construction Health & Safety and through the support of his Employer and peers became the appointed safety representative for the team. This was the catalyst for a career in health and safety, which commenced with gaining formal qualifications at College and University respectively. John has since worked for an asbestos consultancy carrying out asbestos surveys and analytical services for clients throughout the UK. He then spent a number of years working for a reputable demolition contractor, which undertook decommissioning, dismantling and demolition in a variety of sectors including nuclear, petrochemical and development/regeneration. The last 9 years have been spent working for Companies within the refurbishment, new build and civil engineering sectors for both public and private sector clients. He has held the position of Health & Safety Director at two Companies. John has a practical approach and prides himself on engaging with the workforce. Indeed he has worked closely with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL), Trade Unions and the Institute of Employment Studies (IES) on a number of projects and initiatives, including the HSE Leadership and worker involvement toolkit and Safe & Sound at Work-do your bit campaign. http://www.hse.gov.uk/involvement/casestudies/bardsley.pdf. He has been a serving committee member of the North West Construction Safety Group (NWCSG) since 2007 and currently holds the position of General Secretary. http://nwcsg.org.uk/. He is a Chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and is a registered member of the Association for Project Safety (APS). He also appears on the Occupational Safety & Health Consultants Register, (OSHCR). John Thorley Safety Consultancy was incorporated in 2014 and was born out of request s from small, medium and micro construction businesses from across the North west region for practical cost effective, sensible and proportionate advice on construction health and safety matters. Where such advice exceeds his areas of competence set he openly signposts the above mentioned organisations to those that can assist with their area of concern/request.
