Mr Kapil Chudasama
BA (Hons) DipNEBOSH CMIOSH MIFSM
Overview
Most directors of manufacturing and industrial SMEs have health and safety arrangements in place. What they are less sure about is whether those arrangements are legally adequate, and whether what is written down reflects what actually happens on the shop floor. That uncertainty tends to surface at the worst moment: an HSE visit, an accident investigation, an insurer's questions or a customer audit.
I test the documented arrangements against what is actually happening on site, establish what your duties require in practice, and set out what needs attention first. You get a short, ordered list of priorities with the reasoning behind each one - not a long list of generic recommendations. I will tell you plainly what needs doing and, just as importantly, what does not.
The work covers competent person support, health and safety audits, fire risk assessments and the policies, procedures and templates needed to manage things consistently. I concentrate on the risks that carry weight in an industrial setting: machinery and engineering controls; hazardous substances, including dust, welding fume and metalworking fluids; exposure monitoring and health surveillance; noise; fire; and contractor control. Controls are matched to the actual level of risk and to what the business can absorb, so you are not spending money or disrupting production on something that does not warrant it.
Where an employee already coordinates health and safety, I give them the technical direction and backing to do the job properly rather than taking it off them. And when you are specifying a new machine, changing a process or selecting a contractor, you can raise it with me before the decision is made rather than after.
I am a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) and a member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers, and hold diplomas in Occupational Health and Safety and Fire Risk Assessment, so health and safety and fire safety are assessed together rather than separately. My background spans manufacturing and aerospace, and I have supported clients through HSE enforcement notices, from reviewing the initial concerns to preparing the final response and supporting evidence. Before working independently I worked alongside a former health and safety inspector, which shaped how I examine engineering controls, management systems and what people on the floor actually do.
You deal with me directly throughout, on a straightforward annual basis. Health and safety is not a one-off exercise, and the businesses that manage it well are the ones with a consistent adviser who knows their operation, their people and their risks.
