Legionella surveys
In the UK, legionella risk assessments are essential for businesses and organizations seeking to protect their employees’ and visitors’ health and safety. Legionella is a bacteria that can cause a severe lung infection known as Legionnaires’ disease. It can be found in water systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, and water tanks.
A legionella risk assessment is a process of identifying and assessing the risk of legionella contamination in a building’s water systems and implementing measures to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease. This assessment is required by law under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and also the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The assessment typically involves identifying potential sources of Legionella, evaluating the risk of contamination, and implementing appropriate control measures such as water temperature monitoring, regular cleaning and disinfection, and employee training.
Failure to comply with legal requirements for legionella risk assessments can have serious consequences, including financial penalties, legal action, and damage to a business’s reputation. It is, therefore, essential that businesses take their legionella risk assessment obligations seriously and ensure that they are meeting legal requirements.
