Big accident = no insurance!
-
Case Study: A life-changing accident at woodworking workshop led to their insurance company refuse to insure them without significant H&S improvements.
Challenges
• An employee at the Company tripped and sustained life-changing injuries.
• The insurance company dealt with the claim but as it progressed, became more and more concerned with the lack of health and safety in place.
• Finally, six months on, the insurance company declined to insure the Company until they sought professional health and safety advice.
Solutions
• Safety is the Key Ltd were recommend by one of their contacts.
• We visited the Company witing days of being contacted and agreed to provide urgent and immediate H&S support.
• We carried out a Health and safety Audit and identified key areas of urgent improvement.
• We then prepared a range of health and safety documents and an improvement plan for 2022.
• Safety is the Key carried out an on-site Certificated H&S Training Course for all employees and Directors and were able to answer a range of concerns.
• Incremental improvements have been agreed with the Client and work continues.
Results
• We were able to get this Company insured again. The directors were very worried about the consequences.
• The employees now feel re-assured that workplace health and safety would be a priority going forward.
• The company now complies with suitable health and safety standards and these will reduce the chance of a severe accident.

CHAS accreditation needed urgently.
-
Case Study: A small building/renovation construction company urgently required two construction H&S Accreditations (CHAS and Constructionline) to tender for a prestigious contract.
Challenges
• Our Client required two recognised H&S accreditations in order to submit his Tender.
• The standards and criteria for each of these accreditations change every year with the level of evidence and detail required by the assessors ever more challenging.
• The Client was very busy and unsure of the new requirements. It’s not always obvious which sections are voluntary and which are mandatory for a Pass Certificate.
• The Client finds record-keeping challenging. They work safely and responsibly, meeting the standards they need for accreditation, but don’t always have the paperwork or recorded evidence to support their application.
Solutions
• Safety is the Key Ltd provided the necessary templates and forms for the Client to easily and quickly record their H&S inputs.
• We visited the Client on-site to explain the paperwork and carried out some recorded on-site H&S training for the operatives.
• We collated, reviewed, scanned and uploaded all of the evidence provided by the Client, then liaised with the Assessor to help ensure a Pass the first time around.
Results
• We saved the Client time, effort and worry. He was able to focus on his business as we focused on his application.
• The Pass Certificate allowed the Client to put in his Tender on time.
• The use of the Logos from the accreditation companies will enhance his business standing and show other potential Clients his high standards of H&S.

HSE Notices were issued - HELP!
-
Case Study: A loft conversion company was issued with a HSE Enforcement Notice and required urgent H&S assistance.
Challenges
• The Company was an established loft conversion business but a passing HSE inspector decided to inspect his site at a residential house.
• The HSE Inspector issued several Enforcement notices and one Prohibition Notice that required some aspects of the work to stop immediately.
• Stopping the Project and dealing with the HSE’s requirements caused confusion and panic from the Client (homeowner).
• The Company had never dealt with the HSE before and were unsure as to how to satisfy the inspectors requests quickly as their fees were mounting.
Solutions
• Safety is the Key Ltd reviewed the Notices and were able to quickly intervene and liaise with the HSE inspector who was pleased that formal H&S advice had been sought by the Company.
• We visited the Client on-site to explain the documents and carried out some Certificated H&S training for the operatives and management as requested by the HSE inspector.
• We prepared all of the health and safety documents that were required by the HSE.
• We photographed the improvements made on site and gave the HSE inspector evidence of improved health and safety. The HSE cancelled the Notices and the Project re-started.
Results
• We saved the Client a lot of stress and worry as he was panicked and unsure how to move on.
• The Client learnt how to run all of his site Projects safely and felt confident he could avoid any future Notices from the HSE.
• The Client felt that he ‘had learnt a lesson’ but that it had now improved his reputation.
